HRM Rex Goliath Pinot Noir NV
Okay, I'll admit I nearly passed over the HRM Rex Goliath Pinot Noir; I guess I was feeling (hypocritically) like a "snob" that day, and I found the giant rooster on the label to be, frankly, more than a little corny. But, thank goodness my curiosity got the better of me, because what I discovered behind that corny label proved itself to be my #1 pick for best Pinot Noir under $15. The story behind that label (which I now find quite interesting) has to do with "His Royal Majesty, Rex Goliath;" apparently quite the rooster in his day, weighing in at 47 pounds and proudly on display at circus venues in the early 20thcentury. The theory behind the label as it relates to wine making is that Rex Goliath wines are gigantic in flavor and personality; not unlike the famous Rex Goliath himself. This theory proves to be delightfully accurate at very first impression upon uncorking a bottle of HRM Rex Goliath Pinot Noir. It begins with a luxurious nose of sweet, dark cherries and an intriguing hint of spice. The mouth is smooth and velvety, with a touch of cinnamon, leading to a lingering finish of smoky oak and decadent chocolate. This Pinot Noir has a masculine, yet sensuous personality which can be paired with everything from salad to salmon to chocolate fondue. HRM Rex Goliath Pinot Noir is not only a safe wine selection for any occasion; it's a great wine selection. At under $15 a bottle, HRM Rex Goliath Pinot Noir is a smart choice, as well.
